Hongqu

Hongqu (Chinese Red Rice Extract)
Natural Cholesterol Control

Chinese Red Rice is a supplement prepared by fermenting rice in a traditional method used in China. The Chinese name for this fermented rice (which turns red during the process) is Hongqu. Research has shown that this food substance has a profoundly beneficial effect on circulatory health, especially regarding low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and plaque. This particular product also contains Vitamin C and bioflavonoids which have been added for their antioxidant effects.

Heart Disease Prevention
In the United States there are about nine million cardiovascular disease fatalities per year, which is the equivalent of at least ten jumbo jets crashing every day. About half of all deaths in America are due to cardiovascular disease.

Elevated blood fats (hyperlipidemia) is a risk factor for atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and cerebral vascular disease (stroke). In America, 58 million people have cholesterol levels in the borderline-high range. This range is too high for health, but too low for prescription drugs. Many people are looking for natural ways to reduce cholesterol without drugs, too. General recommendations for reducing cholesterol and LDL's (low density lipoproteins, the kind known to be harmful) include moderate regular exercise, decreased intake of saturated fats and increased consumption of dietary fiber.

Many people are surprised to learn that even after reducing their fat intake, their blood fat levels remain high. This is because only 1/3 of blood cholesterol comes from the diet. The remainder is manufactured in the liver. Stress contributes to cholesterol manufacture, since cholesterol is needed by the adrenals to produce hormones which help our body adapt to stress. So, stress management is also important in cardiovascular health.

Benefits of Red Rice
Chinese Red Rice contains HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors like lovastatin and mevinolin. These substances inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. In a study conducted principally by Chinese physicians, over 500 volunteers were given either red rice or gynostemma, a Chinese herb also known to reduce cholesterol levels.

After eight weeks of treatment those taking the red rice showed significant improvement in blood fat composition. Total cholesterol was reduced by 22%, triglycerides by 35% and LDL's by 31%. HDL's (high density lipoproteins, the good type of fat our body needs) rose by 19%. There was also some improvement in the group given gynostemma, but the changes were less than half of those experienced in the group using red rice.

Red rice was judged to be highly effective in almost 89% of the patients taking it and effective in 93% of the group. The gynostemma group, in contrast, had only 3 1% of the group in which the results were judged as highly effective and only 51% effective overall. Obviously, red rice offers significant hope to many people for improving their cardiovascular health.

The Vitamin C and lemon bioflavonoids in this product further act to reduce risk by helping to prevent free radical damage to arteries. Free radical damage triggers the process of plaque formation. It appears that Hongqu, combined with good diet, exercise and other preventative measures, can help many people reduce their cholesterol and improve their cardiovascular health.

Recommended Use:
For optimal benefits, take one capsule two to three times daily with a meal. Hongqu is for adults only. Please read warnings on the label carefully. People with or at risk for liver disease should not use this product.
