Flash-Ease

Herbal Help for Hot Flashes

The combination Flash-Ease is a simple, but effective herbal formula for many common female problems related to menopause and the menstrual cycle. The tablets provide a standardized extract of black cohosh in time release form along with the Chinese herb, dong quai. Here's how these two herbs can aid hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, as well as common symptoms of PMS.

Black Cohosh
This leafy perennial, which can reach heights of nine feet, has a gnarled, black root that is famous as a remedy for female reproductive problems. One of the reasons it benefits the female glandular system is the presence of phytoestrogens known as isoflavones. These plant-based estrogens are not identical to the three forms of estrogen produced in the human body (esterase, estrone and estradiol), but they do have an estrogen-like effect. They bond to estrogen receptor cites in the cells and weakly stimulate them. They also help to protect the body against the stronger xenoestrogens (environmental pollutants such as pesticides that have an estrogenic effect).
Black cohosh is also an antispasmodic herb, so it helps to relieve muscle cramps often associated with periods. Another effect of black cohosh is an anti-inflammatory action, which may contribute to its ability to relieve hot flashes.

It has also been clinically found to promote and restore healthy menstrual activity, soothe irritation of the uterus, cervix and vagina, relieve the pain and distress of pregnancy, and contribute to quick, easy and uncomplicated deliveries.

Historically it has been used for conditions such as arthritis, asthma, bronchitis, convulsions, water retention, high blood pressure, nerves, rheumatism, snakebites and whooping cough. It also has an antidepressant action that is especially useful for post-parturition depression, or depression associated with feelings of "doom and gloom."

Black cohosh is a strong medicinal herb and should be used cautiously and in low doses. An excessive amount may cause dizziness, light-headedness, nausea and headache. However, the time-release action of this formula causes the constituents of the herb to be released slowly over time and greatly reduces the chances of these undesirable effects. However, if these symptoms occur while taking Flash-Ease, reduce the dose or discontinue the product.

Dong Quai
This relative of Western angelica is used extensively in China as a post-parturition tonic after child delivery. While it does not have a direct estrogenic effect it appears to help regulate estrogen usage in the body. It helps to build and nourish the blood, regulate the menses and relieve abdominal pains. It improves blood flow in the abdominal and pelvic areas.

Dong Quai can also be effective in enhancing body metabolism and increasing oxygen utilization in the liver, as well as intensifying glutamic acid and cysteine oxidation. The herb has been found to act against vitamin E deficiency, which may account for its fetus-stabilizing influence and protection against testicular disease. Although prescribed most widely for women, the herb is also valuable to men who show signs of anemia and can help prevent atherosclerosis and lipid deposits in the arteries.

Usage
These two herbs are found in a base containing maltodextrin, cellulose, stearic acid, di-calcium phosphate and magnesium. Recommended usage is one tablet in the morning and one at bedtime.

Q: Please set me straight. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is supposed to help with women's heart health, I understand. Flash Ease is working very well for me, but I wonder if I am lacking the heart health benefit from the HRT. What supplement would one recommend to gain the same heart health benefits? -JMoody

Flash Ease (or black cohosh) has been shown to be at least as good and probably better at protecting the heart than HRT. There is simply no good reason for HRT since black cohosh has been medically proven superior in ALL aspects, and is without the negatives. For more on the subject see: http://www.drweed.com/newsletters/women.html

If for some reason you want further assurance against heart problems there is always Cardio Assurance. -Duane

Perhaps your liver is dumping excess estrogen and you might need to do a liver cleanse. Tiao He or one of the liver combinations. -Diane Toombs

What time of day are you having the hot flashes, and do you take calcium, and/or drink caffeine?

Have you tried using Pro-G-Yam Cream to address the root problem of the hot flashes? I would also recommend reading Dr. John Lee's book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Menopause. -Sharon Grimes
