I lived in high altitude for a long time. You need to know two things about altitude sickness--it can kill people who are genetically disposed to severe altitude sickness, and two, it can severely disable people whose ancestors were not born to the altitude in about 5 to 9 years of constantly being in the altitude. This is from a study by the Argentine railways. This is a disease that needs to be respected. People who are born in the altitude actually have an extra lobe in their lungs that enables them to have proper oxygen exchange. What about short term time in the altitude? Here herbs can and should help. Any herbs that encourage the production of hemoglobin should be used. In Bolivia they put parsley in and on everything in the altitude. Adequate safe water must be consumed. Herbs like Milk Thistle that help build the liver can help here also, since the liver plays a major role in recycling hemoglobin.
If someone from the lower areas is just going up to the altitude to visit someone, suggest blood building herbs (Combination Three works--it is simple but effective) and suggest they take up flute or piccolo lessons or practice whistling their favorite songs. They should play or whistle until they get light headed. The play for just short of that amount of time three times a day for a week. Then play or whistle again until they are lightheaded and see if they have improved. These actions force the body to produce more red blood cells--with enough red blood cells a person can tolerate the altitude much better. However, and this is what gets some people in the long run, the recycling of hemoglobin must be efficient, and adequate intake of anemia fighting herbs will help with that. Altitude sickness is basically like anemia and the symptoms are very much the same. Some people can make the adjustment and others simply cannot. -Marilyn Navarro

I have heard that Ginger is good to settle the stomach and Melatonin for the altitude adjustment. Melatonin is also good for Jet Lag. -Suzanne |
