Alpha Lipoic Acid and Anti-Aging

Check out the October, 2002 issue of Discover Magazine (page 62.)

In that issue there is an article called "Free Radical" about Bruce Ames, an eminent 73-year-old biochemist at the Un. of Calif. at Berkeley and winner of the National Medal of Science. He is famous for his work done beginning in the 1950s for the National Institutes of Health in which he discovered an easy way to determine the carcinogen potential of chemicals without long and tedious animal experiments. He was the primary scientist responsible for proving that most cancer-causing chemicals act by damaging genes - a fact that is completed accepted today because of his work.

As you know, free radicals are considered to be the major contributors to the aging process. His experiments more recently (over the past 10 years or so) have led him to what he thinks is the optimal plan to slow the aging process, particularly as it relates to the brain, by slowing damage done to the mitochondria of the cells by free radicals, particularly in the brain. Much of his work on this subject has been replicated by scientists over the world and has been accepted by the scientific community.

He recommends supplementation with two nutrients, l-carnitine (an amino acid) and lipoic acid (known as the universal antioxidant because it is both fat and water soluble so it crosses any membrane easily, including the blood brain barrier.) He has also identified other common nutrients that slow the aging process. "There will be other things to add to this mixture," he says. "This is just the beginning of getting a really good aging- intervention therapy."

NSP just introduced Alpha Lipoic Acid as a new product at National Convention in Nashville. We have had l-Carnitine for a long time. Alpha Lipoic Acid is also an ingredient in several of our products, including Brain Protex.

It should be noted that the purpose of such anti-aging intervention is not just to prolong life. Its primary purpose is to improve function in latter years, particularly as it relates to the brain; or perhaps I should say more correctly, to retard or reduce the loss of function, particularly in the brain, that accompanies the aging process. So it is not just a matter of living longer. It is a matter of maintaining the quality of life as we age.

We should all be taking NSP's l-Carnitine and alpha lipoic acid every day. I am taking mine along with Brain Protex. -Duane
