Scleroderma

Has anyone had any experience with scleroderma? Evidently, this disease manifests itself by collagen accumulation in the skin as well as calcium deposits in the tissues. Eventually, there is hardening and scarring of internal organs resulting in interference of normal organ function, which leads to death. -Deon

I found this on the scleroderma web site

Scleroderma Fact Sheet
Scleroderma IS ... ·A chronic, auto-immune disease of the connective tissue generally classified as one of the rheumatic diseases. Also known as systemic sclerosis.
·A disease in which the symptoms may either be visible, e.g. when the skin is affected, or invisible, e.g. when internal organs are involved.
••A highly-individualized disease. Its involvement may range from very mild symptoms to life-threatening complications.
Scleroderma IS NOT ...
*Contagious
*Cancerous or considered malignant in any way *Inherited, as a general rule
Who has Scleroderma? An estimated 150,000 persons in the United States have scleroderma. Approximately 4 times more women than men develop the disease.
Causes of Scleroderma The exact cause or causes of scleroderma are unknown. It is known that the disease process in scleroderma involves an overproduction of collagen.
Classifications of Scleroderma
1. Localized scleroderma
••More common in children
••Usually found in only a few places on the skin or in the muscles.
••Rarely, if ever, does localized scleroderma develop into the systemic form of the disease.
2. Systemic sclerosis May affect the connective tissue in many parts of the body, e.g. the skin, the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, kidneys, heart and other internal organs. It may also affect blood vessels, muscles and joints. Symptoms of Scleroderma –– MAY include one or more of the following:
••Raynaud's Phenomenon (abnormal sensitivity to cold in the extremities)
••Swelling of the hands and feet
••Pain and stiffness of the joints
••Thickening of the skin
••Joint contractures
••Digestive system and gastrointestinal tract problems
••Sjogren's Syndrome (dry mucus membranes)
••Oral, facial and dental problems
••Kidney, heart and lung involvement
••Non-specific symptoms such as extreme fatigue, generalized weakness weight loss and vague aching of muscles, joints and bones

How is Scleroderma diagnosed?
The diagnostic process may require consultations with rheumatologists (arthritis specialists) and dermatologists (skin specialists) as well as blood studies and a variety of specialized tests depending upon which organs are affected. The treatment program varies depending on the type and severity of the symptoms. Diagnosis may be very difficult, particularly in the early stages, because many of the symptoms are common to, or may overlap with those of other diseases, especially other connective tissue diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and polymyositis.

One patient of Dr. Andrew Weil, John Luja, used 5,000 units of Vitamin E a day for two weeks which is an extremely high dose. He also decided to try vinegar, eating fresh lemons and aloe vera juice. He drank it every day and soon the itching was gone. His disease had been present for six months. Two months after he started his home remedies, it stopped spreading, Then the hardened skin began to soften. After six months, the condition started to disappear on his arms and chest. After two years it was gone and has never come back. He made changes in his life to decrease the stress also. This man's son-in-law said, "I think it was the way he was raised, in a culture that valued home remedies more than professional treatment. He never bought into the doctors' pessimism. And he really had faith in his Aloe Juice. He always had a gallon of the stuff with him and drank it by the glass. "My health today is pretty good," says John. "I still use vinegar if I get any itching. I still eat lemons from time to time. And I try not to go to doctors." (Excerpted from "Spontaneous Healing" by Andrew Weil, M.D.) -Nolee

I have heard you need to especially work on the circulatory system -- possibly CoQ10, they say. Also, maybe Pau D'Arco or Una de Gato. -Brenda Holcomb

Colostrum is said to help with scleroderma. It aids in repairing RNA/DNA. -Inge Wetzel

I recently read that Gotu Kola can be helpful for this condition. The following excerpt comes from the book, "The Healing Power of Herbs", by Michael Murray, ND. "The standardized extract of Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) has been tested in several trials in the treatment of scleroderma (including systemic sclerosis). In addition to decreasing skin induration, patients have noticed a lessening of arthralgia and improved finger motility. Presumably the positive therapeutic response is a result of centella's balancing effect on connective tissue, thereby preventing the excessive collagen synthesis observed in scleroderma. In one study of 13 female patients with scleroderma, oral administration of 20 milligrams of centella extract given three times weekly was very successful in 3 of 13, successful in 8 of 13, and unsuccessful in only 2 of 13. Improvement consisted of decreased skin hardening, reduced joint pain, and improved finger mobility. It has been more that 20 years since this study and other studies were performed. Given the positive results attained at an extremely low dose, it is unfortunate that more research has not been done." -Deana Persson

I haven't seen this disease for a long time, but now that we have Colostrum, MSM, Super Algae I would use them copiously. Super Algae and Colostrum repair RNA/DNA and MSM repaird scars and scar like tissues. I think it's worth a try. -Dalean Harris

Here it is in one of the articles on MSM that I posted to the FAQ page months ago. Scleroderma. The initial symptoms of Scleroderma (syscernic sclerosis) are swelling and thickening of the fingertips. It evolves into a chronic disease with scarring of the skin, joints and internal organs. When this scarring affects the esophagus, patients experience difficulty swallowing and chronic heartburn. Jacob, who has served as the medical director for the Scleroderma International Foundation for more than 25 years says that both MSM and DMSO can ease symptoms. Both substances appear to normalize collagen formation. -Georgiana Duncan

Schleroderma is a connective tissue disease in which the cause is not known, according to the Merck Manual of Medical Information. It scars the skin, organs, tissues, joints, and blood vessels go wacky. Conventional treatment is of cortisone shots, anti-inflammatories, antacids, and immunosuppressive. I know of a lady who had it and took LOTS of products and years of trial and error to find out what worked; she used many healing modalities; a lot of NSP products and others...the Colostrum helped her a lot. I don't know what all she took. -Nancy

I would do MSM, because the main problems is a hardening of cell-walls. Plenty of Enzymes and a good change of diet. -Inge Wetzel

I have a client who has been diagnosed with scleroderma for 7 years. It affects her digestion tract, has a lack of saliva, problems swallowing, has stomach problems, the colon walls are torn, has blood in the stool, the gall bladder and bladder are also affected. My client also has serious problems walking, had a hysterectomy, and the bladder had dropped and had to be repositioned. My client''s skin is also affected, and the client has tight skin and hardening of the back muscles. The age of my client is 72yrs. of age, mentally alert, and has many food allergies. Her eyes have turned from grayish blue to gray. Is their anyone that can suggest a natural treatment regime using our products, and dietary recommendations. -Gudrun

Recently my neighbor was diagnosed as having Scleroderma. I looked it up on my Merck manual CD and it can affect people in different ways. Because it involves the skin and we have skin inside and out, it will affect the weakest tissue. The cause is unknown but it is considered an autoimmune disorder. Most autoimmune disorders are caused by a virus. My recommendation would be: Viral Recovery Homeopathic, Olive Leaf Extract and Horsetail (for the silicon benefits). Generally, these people are severely mineral deficient so I would also recommend Mineral Chi. -Mary
