Salicylic Acid

Is anyone familiar with salicylic acid and what it does? -Andy Wolf

I was thinking it was the so-called "active" ingredient of willow bark and here's what was discovered on the WW web: Salicylic acid - a drug that kills bacteria and fungi and causes skin to peel, taken from willow bark. A link is below. Go "Google" and search salicylic acid for more info. I could not find an "official" drug reference on consumer.pdr.net

I believe that aspirin is actually acetyl-salicylic acid. However, the two are closely related. Salicylic acid is the active ingredient in Compound W and other similar wart removal products. It is a very caustic acid which actually burns the wart off. By the way, that is why aspirin burns a hole in your stomach. 2,000 Americans die annually due to gastrointestinal bleeding caused from aspirin and another 20,000 are hospitalized. This compound may also appear in some herbs, but due to the very small amounts found in the herbs, combined with the other ingredients naturally found in the herbs, the herbs are not nearly so caustic as the drug forms which are very concentrated nearly pure acid. -Duane

It is also called acetylsalicylic acid. aspirin is crystalline compound, CH3COOC6H4COOH, derived from salicylic acid. Willow bark provides naturally-occurring salicylates, which inhibit the catabolism of tryptophan in the blood; these actions enhance the delivery of tryptophan to the brain and increase serotonin synthesis. -Kim
