Salicylates in Foods
Salicylates
This is a list of foods that contain salicylates. I know food changes come slowly and take time, but please look over this list and evaluate the following (you may want to print it out so you can mark it up):
1) which foods are not even an issue
2) which foods your son/daughter eats that could EASILY be replaced
3) which foods your son/daughter eats that would be difficult to change
For example, one of the food choices is colored cheese. It's certainly easy enough to get non-colored cheese - we've just become accustomed to sliced cheese, especially, being orange. So, perhaps that would go in the #2 category. Start changing the diet slowly and evaluate how to proceed.

Salicylates are naturally occurring in foods such as apples, almonds, apricots, berries, plums, prunes, raisins, cucumbers, cloves, wintergreen, tomatoes, and white willow. Supposedly it is needed by the plant for disease resistance. They're used in various flavorings in some beverages, candies, baked goods, gum, and ice cream. It is known to cause symptoms in high doses but natural small amounts are in food. The foods using this as an additive (listed above) are the most likely to affect ADHD children. You may want to eliminate those foods first. The naturally occuring salicylates in foods are less likely to be a problem, but you may want to serve smaller portions of these foods less often. -Carol Matz |
