Ritalin

Dear friends, My friend was told her son needs to go on Ritalin. She wants to know the pros and cons. Could you help us? Thanx so much. -Irene Showalter

What I personally have found very helpful lately with my grandson is Omega 3 EPA. (Fish Oils). I read an article on this subject swearing by this - had my daughter try it and it's a miracle in a bottle. She gives him 1/2 cap squirted into his mouth (He is under 3), twice daily. Within a couple of minutes of being with him, I can tell if he has had it yet or not. -Georgiana

Q: Does anyone know how I can find out what natural alternatives would be okay to take while trying to wean my niece off Concerta (type of Ritalin), or can we just stop the Concerta altogether. I just need to know how to find out these answers. Thanks in advance for any info. -Lisa S

This is difficult. I would never suggest just stopping any medication. You can talk to your doctor about adding Flax Seed Oil or NSP new GLA. It does help with ADD. Also diet is of a concern. No processed foods or foods with preservatives. No sodas, sugar or refined foods. Just good old fashioned whole foods are best. I find that many children with ADD react to preservatives. Just some thoughts. -Suzanne

Suzanne has the right idea about diet - this is the key. However, for extra help you might also try Focus Attention along with the Flax Seed Oil. If this is not quite enough, test for Colloidal Minerals, Children's Multiple Vitamins and any other basic nutritional products. You can also add Ginkgo/Gotu Kola Concentrate for the brain and Papaya Mint for digestion. Do muscle test for these products to see just what is needed. You can also muscle test the types of foods the child has been eating to see if there is anything they need to stay away from. -Mike, N.D.

Q: I have been asked if there is any supplements for a child with ADHD. I have never had any one with this problem before so I don't know alot about it. The Dr. wants him to take ritalin and he refuses. He being a 12 year old boy, ask his mother could he have a vitamin, because he didn't like the way the ritalin made him feel. He is very hyper and can't focus in school more than a few minutes at a time. Any help will truly be appreciated. Thanks -Rita

Suggest to the mother that the 12-year old take 100-200 mg per day of Phosphatidylserine (a soy deriviative), plus DMAE. I believe Nature's Sunshine has one or both of these ingredients in Brain Protex, but they are also available as a combination in this potency from other companies (email me for details).

Gingko and Flax Seed Oil may also help a great deal. NSP's Stress-J has long been recommended for hyperactivity.

Eliminate all sugars, artificial colors and flavors, and refined flours from the child's diet. There is some indication that vaccinations may play a role in causing ADHD symptoms. To Your Health, -David Ross, ND

Don't forget the Focus Attention! This was developed to be used for ADD and ADHD along with Flax Seed Oil. The child can either take the Focus Attention capsules or he can have a great tasting drink with the Focus Attention powder.

You may also want to have him sniff the Focus essential oil. This has helped a lot of people, adults as well as children, who need help in focusing their attention. It could be put on a tissue that he carries in his pocket or just put a drop on the collar of his shirt.

I definitely agree with David on the diet - get those sugars, carbs and dairy out of the diet! The child is looking for proper nutrition, help him find it with good fruits and veggies! -Mike, N.D.

Let's also not forget the blood sugar issue. Hypoglycemia often manifests as these type of symptoms. Add Chromium GTF to your program and HY-A. SynerProTein can be mixed with the Focus Attention powder. -Charlotte Commero, ND, CNHP

I just took a workshop on Blood types and I learned that 85% of people who are ADHD are type 0. It would be helpful to learn the child's blood type and then learn to eat right for his blood type. (Refer the book). Also search the FAQ of the NSP Forum, there are some great testimonials for ADHD. -Marguerite
