Pregnancy - Gestational Diabetes

In addition to all the expert comments on diet and exercise, I'd like to add another personal testimony.

I failed the first glucose tolerance test during the 5th month of pregnancy with my daughter (now 2). This was a shock/wake-up-call to me (although I should have know I wasn't getting enough protein and too many sugars from all the carbs I ate - I had been vegetarian for the most part for years) I added NSP SynerProTein with and in between meals when I wasn't sipping on Red Raspberry tea. It really helped my sugar cravings. And I started eating chicken (couldn't quite get into fish), and beef once in a while (never eaten it before). I also had advice from a natural minded obstetrics nurse who said walk after ever meal even just 10 - 15 min to lower sugar levels. I had been trying to walk 30min once a day before, but started walking more often.

I had been using the NSP Prenatals, but switched to Super Supplemental since it has chromium, added an extra Chromium GTF and Folic Acid, and added Burdock capsules (I can't find it now, but I had read that even with it's cleansing nature could be used during pregnancy and really helped sugar levels - there were cautions during very early pregnancy or for history of pre-term labor, but I chose to use a small amt). And I stayed on my Herbal Trace Minerals with Dandelion to take the load of the liver.

I went back for my 2nd test (the 3 hour sugar test) and walked the halls of the hospital the whole time in between each dose of the sugar drink. I passed! I know the herbs, diet and exercise all helped!

I also have a friend who is type 1 diabetic who used Burdock during her pregnancy too. -Sarah

Certainly your girlfriend can be using high potency garlic and acidophilus for the yeast. She can also take one drop of tea tree oil in a glass of water two times each day. Her diet, however, is the most critical part of working with the diabetes. Protein and complex carbohydrates (think vegetables excluding potatoes and carrots since they are very sugar-reactive) need to make up the bulk of her diet. She needs 2 – 3 ounces of protein at every meal and as snacks three times per day. Regular exercise, a good walk twice each day, can help. Every pregnant woman becomes slightly diabetic. The hormone surges that maintain her pregnancy cause her cells to become insulin resistant. To the best of my knowledge there isn't much she can do with herbs. Diet and exercise are her best bets. -Judith Cobb

I had this. The key is to control eating, portions as well as types of food. Drink plenty of water and no other type of beverage, eliminate sweets and added sugar and breads, use Stevia. I've heard of doctors giving insulin to pregnant ladies with this. This is insanity. Get a grip on the diet. -Chottsie

10 years ago I had a Diabetes Consultant put me on a program where I ate so many carbs so often. I think it was about 12 grams every 4 hours? But don't take that as for sure. (Been awhile ) Point is it kept my blood sugar level and it worked for me. I am sure others will have more specific recommendations. -Leslie Baldwin
