Pau D ‘Arco Tea

I know that the directions say to steep the tea for 20 minutes. But can you do it for longer, and if so does it just make the tea stronger?

Also, I have noticed a frequency in urination and a brighter yellow color since drinking the tea. Is this normal? Part of the detoxification?

Is there any use for the bark after steeping? Thanks. -Jennifer

It takes 20 to 25 minutes to extract the tea from the bark. Steeping it longer can dilute the effects.

I put the used tea in the compost pile or around the herbs to add nutrients to the soil.

As for the color of the urine and detoxification if it increases bile flow, you will get a yellow color in the urine just like taking B-Vitamins. -Suzanne

Amazes me the different ways we learn . . . . I've been a NSP manager for over 22 years (lost track of exact year). I was taught and have heard the same along the way -- that therapeutic brewing of Pau D' Arco Tea is to simmer for 20 minutes and steep overnight (8 hours). That the 20 minute steeping directions are for the tea as a beverage. This is what I, in turn, have taught. -Georgiana

I believe and it depends on who we are educated by. I was taught that Essiac Tea is brewed for 20 minutes and steeped for 8 hours. It too is a anti-cancer formula. Stephen Horne was one of the members of the AMA when it was first founded. I studied with this group of herbalists. I have noticed that even when working with doctors they all have their protocols according to the University they graduated with.

What I have been taught is bark, root, stems simmer for 20-25 minutes to extract. Flowers and Leaf are not simmered but steeped for 15 minutes to extract. I see all teas as medicinal and therapeutic when extracted in these methods. -Suzanne
