Mold

We have extensive mold in our attic. We had an engineer in here yesterday who told us to spray hydrogen peroxide on it and we would see it disappear. My husband tried that on a portion of it and Kim Balas' formula for mold with tea tree, Sunshine Concentrate and water on another portion. Nothing disappeared. Do we have to wash down all the rafters after this has set on them or is the mold dead, just not disappearing? We also have an air purifier. We were told to run that because it would kill mold too. Any help would be appreciated as we have to continue this on Sunday in order to get it done before the freezing weather comes back. -Nolee

I hope someone has a better solution. Chlorine Bleach is supposed to kill mold -- but it makes you wonder if THAT cure is worse than the mold itself.

My daughter had mold in-between her outside wall behind her bathtub. A pipe was leaking in the wall. It cost her $4000.00 she could ill afford. She had to have the entire wall cut out and replaced -- so she had the tub and floor replaced while she was at it. The man that did her work told her there's NO way to kill that mold once it's in the wooden framework of a house.

I HOPE someone has a better solution for you. I think this subject has come up before. Why don't you try doing a "SEARCH" for "BLACK MOLD". -Georgiana

Why don't you eliminate the cause? Just as you uncompromise your own biological terrain with herbs and neutraceuticals, your 'domicidal terrain' needs attention, to wit, louvers at either end of the attic to allow air to circulate freely across the attic. They are probably there already, but clogged, or not large enough to allow a good flow of air.

The floor of the attic needs to be well insulated so that the cold air does not penetrate your ceilings. Then you can allow the normal cold winter air (as well as the hot summer air) to circulate thru the attic via the louvers. This denies moisture (the real culprit breeding the mold) to accumulate in the attic, which is what the mold requires to grow. The present mold should die of itself, if deprived of the biologic conditions it needs to proliferate on rafters, peak etc. Spraying with fresh hydrogen peroxide or the other formula will likely kill most of the mold that is there now (yes, the black will remain ,dead, unless you wipe it off, a thankless job!) but mold can only grow when given a moist ambient...dead air that hugs the attic without moving thru the louvers. Then check the louvers spring and fall, as wasps, birds etc will clog them with nests. In rare cases, you may require a small attic fan to force the air to flow. -Harvey

Spray it with Nature's Fresh and Tea Tree monthly.

It may not disappear without wiping it, but regular applications of this will change the 'terrain' so to speak and limit or eliminate its ability to grow. -Desiree
