Menopause & Hot Flashes

"Weakness in woman." This is how 17 "leading medical specialists"
categorized menopause in a 1943 health book. Attitudes and health care for menopause have improved over the decades, but are women getting the best care possible? In her article, "Graceful Transition: Managing Menopause," Lauri Aesoph, N.D examines what natural health care providers can offer for menopause, as well as how society's perspective on it can help or hinder a menopausal woman.

My mom was taken off estrogen three months . She developed phlebitis and the doctor said it was the estrogen. She is now experiencing only hot flashes. She was on estrogen for eight years and is 59. Any suggestions on what herbal program she should be on?

If hormones are out of balance, so is your diet. So first I'd check and see what your mom's eating. To balance the hormones she would need to be eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables, avoiding non-organic meats, and drinking our wonderful Nature's Spring water daily. If she's 150 lbs, she needs to drink 75oz of water. I would start with Pro-G-Yam Cream. 1/4 t morning and evening for 3 months, then as she improves, sustain to 1/4 t per day.
Vitamin E w/Selenium for hot flashes. 1200-1600 IU ( 1 w every meal)-this worked great for my sister...
Bowel Build, (make sure she has a minimum of 3 bowel movements/day)
Food Enzymes or Proactazyme, Sunshine Daily Essentials, Flax Seed Oil,
High Potency Garlic, Capsicum, Citrus Bioflavonoids or Absorbate C.
After her hormones have come more into balance, I would have her do the Tiao He Cleanse 3 times per year.
I would have her muscle tested for herbals like Female Comfort, DHEA-F, C-X, etc. -Joan Kasich

Personally, I found C-X did wonders to eliminate my severe hot flashes after having a surgical menopause. After about 6 six months, it was no longer necessary.
About 3 years later I started taking Pro-G-Yam Cream and Vitamin E for vaginal problems with great success. I've never had a hot flash again (thank God). - jcandy

Menopause. It sounds like your hormones may be out of balance. I had a client like this then her next symptom was hot flashes. I would consider Vitamin E. Start with 400IU and work up to 1200 for a couple of months and then work your way down to 4oo again. Take a look at C-X or FC with Dong Quai and see which sounds more appropriate for you. You may also want to do some cleaning in the liver. -Lynette Schultz

I have been using the Natural Changes Packet as well as Vitamin E. I had my ovaries and uterus removed three years ago and about six months ago switched from estrace to herbs. I have had no problems with hot flashes and am very glad to be off synthetic estrogen. My experience with other women that use C-X has been great, most have had quick results. -Michelle

Linda cannot sleep due to hot flashes--using all the normal stuff we talk about. Her chiropractor suggested she take 1600 IU of Vitamin E with Selenium at bedtime. She now sleeps through the night. Worth a try for those with sleeplessness due to hot flashes! -Kay Lubecke

Joan Vandergriff, National Manager, gave wonderful information on this at the 1998 Leader's Conference. Tape #3 from Tape of the Week 1-800-811-1132 is where you will find this. These tapes are a wonderful way to get educated if you didn't attend. I recommend all 18 tapes highly. -Kay Lubecke

This is, for most ladies, a much more complicated issue than just C-X or just Pro-G-Yam Cream. Often we have to take EVERYTHING for menopause just to get some sleep. Even then it will be interrupted at best.
Here is my Hot Flashes information. Try everything and eventually she will find the magic combination to at least make menopause bearable. After four years of it, I occasionally still get discouraged, but I just remind myself that it is better than breast cancer, which the hormone replacement therapy increases the odds for.
Hot Flashes:
Natural Changes Packet
C-X (Estrogenic) 6-8 capsules daily
Vitamin E with Selenium - 800 - 1600 I.U. daily
Licorice Root* - 1-2 daily
Wild Yam & Pro-G-Yam Cream (Acts like progesterone)
Master Gland, Target TS II, and/or HY-C to balance the glands
IF-C ("Clear the Heat")
HY-C - Chinese hormone combination
Homeopathic: Menopause Remedy
Licorice - 2 regular caps at bedtime will act as precursor to hormones.
Cleanse the bowel as bowel toxicity will affect the glands.
Daily Exercise

"I have a female client with night sweats, no more periods. She bought some C-X and wants to know how long it should take before the sweats are gone. Is this different with the individual or can she experience it soon? Is Pro-G-Yam Cream better for this?"

Might want to try HY-C (brings down the heat). I have used it and also other clients with success - taken before bed at night. Also might want to add Phyto-Soy. Soy contains traces of naturally occurring estrogen and that also has been a help. -Darlene Agle

" She has tried Pro-G-Yam Cream and Vitamin E"
Natural Changes Packets - IF-C - HY-C are all products to help with hot flashes. -Kay Lubecke

"She is also having red and itchy eye lids and wonders it this could be another symptom of menopause."
Essential fatty acids (Black Currant Oil or Evening Primrose Oil) may help with the hot flashes and the dry eye lids. Eyebright (2 or 3 at a time) may help the itchy eye. -Georgiana Duncan
