Menopausal Issues & HRT

The recommendation I have seen for switching from synthetic hormones to a natural progesterone cream (such as Pro-G-Yam) is to stop the Provera immediately, but taper off the estrogen gradually. You can find more info on natural progesterone cream at Dr. John Lee's webpage: http://www.worldworks.net/health -Barb

If she stops the estrogen supplementation cold turkey, she will most likely experience bleeding again. Dr. Lee recommends cutting back gradually, beginning with one pill every other day, to prevent this from happening. -Deana

I'm also 51 yr. old. (that's years young) and had my ovaries surgically removed many years ago. A specialist in Menopause has worked with me gradually from a high dose of Premarin to herbal products. I suggest Pro-G-Yam cream (excellent), Wild Yam/Chaste Tree and Vitamin E. C-X stopped terrible hot flashes for me when nothing else would! -J Candy Arnold

Book Suggestion
A book suggestion. Search Amazon.com
If you've been experiencing menopausal symptoms -- hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings -- the discomfort alone probably has you at least considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Wouldn't it be great to find a comprehensive discussion of the pros and cons that also provides information on alternative therapies, including diet and exercise? You won't find a better all-in-one guide than Dr. Susan Love's Hormone Book: Making Informed Choices about Menopause by Susan M. Love, Karen Lindsey

Dr. Love strongly cautions women about present-day hormone therapy by painstakingly dissecting the studies that bolster and batter that choice. The book's remarkably clear explanations can help you sift through all sorts of overhyped health information. It also offers alternatives and lifestyle changes to help ward off menopause discomfort, osteoporosis and heart disease. -Georgiana Duncan

I had tried many things after having a hysterectomy 6 years ago. Didn't want to use synthetics. (I did use very low dose for awhile). About two-three years ago I heard someone speak about yam cream. I started using our Pro-G-Yam, Phyto-Soy, 1 DHEA-F a day, Pantothenic Acid, Potassium Combination, and I always add Proactazyme. This works for me. I have never felt so good emotionally. If I had known, as much about our products back then as I do now, I would never have had a hysterectomy. But I am still grateful to be a part of NSP. I haven't used synthetic hormones for two-three years. Oh, and I always take Calcium/Mag/D along with PDA at night. -Nita Senita

Balancing Female Hormones...Stop the Madness by Jim Lynn
"Most women are very surprised to learn that the benefits they are seeking from hormone replacement therapy comes mostly from progesterone, not estrogen." Dr. John Lee M.D. The life of every woman is deeply affected by the ebb and flow of hormones. Two important hormones, estrogen and progesterone, are responsible for the monthly rhythm of menstrual cycles. When one or the other of these two hormones lacks balance with the other, the all too common miseries of PMS and menopause ensue. What is sad is most women think this occurrence is normal, without realizing there is help for many, if not most of these problems.

The answer, according to a growing number of researchers and medical professionals, lies in supplementation with NATURAL progesterone. Their studies reveal that progesterone, is beneficial for a wide range of symptoms related to PMS and menopause, and that progesterone may be the key factor in preventing and even reversing osteoporosis. Natural Versus Synthetic Progesterone: It's important to understand the difference between natural and synthetic progesterone, a distinction many doctors are not aware of. Natural progesterone is a plant extract, so close to what the body produces that it is easily converted into the identical molecule. It is considered extremely safe with no known side effects. The most widely used extract is cultured from the wild yam. Synthetic progesterone, such as Provera, are called progestins or progestogens, and are known to have a wide range of side effects. In fact, the list of side effects, risks, and warning for Provers is a full page long. The range of side effects runs from unpleasant fluid retention to serious illnesses like blood clots and uterine and breast cancers.
"Synthetic progesterone causes side effects," says Dr. John Lee of Sebastopol, California, because, "it's not progesterone. The pharmaceutical companies alter the molecular structure so it no longer fits into the bio-chemical machinery of the body. "Why would they do this? They cannot make the kinds of massive profits they want from selling a low-cost natural substance. Also, they traditionally function by marketing only patented products, something they cannot do marketing natural progesterone by itself.

Beware of Estrogen:
Today we are hearing more and more about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). The media stories about HRT would have us believe that estrogen is an elixir of youth that every woman over age 50 should take. However according to Dr. Lee and a growing number of medical pros, estrogen actually has the opposite effect...Its more like an elixir of aging and death. Estrogen, of course, is necessary, but too much estrogen stimulates cell growth. Rapid cell growth leads to fibrocystic breasts, uterine fibroids, and eventually cancer. By prescribing estrogen, instead of progesterone, physicians are actually making things worse, not better.

Typically, the patient is prescribed estrogen to relieve menopausal symptoms. Unfortunately, when conditions continue, doctors routinely INCREASE the estrogen dosage thinking their patients aren't getting enough of it to do any good. As a result, millions of women endure cramping, migraines, mood swings, bloat, cancer, and osteoporosis. Reason? Doctors are trained to treat menopause as an estrogen deficiency
disease. Dr. Lee has proven conclusively that it is not, and points to progesterone as the HRT needed by most women. There is strong evidence that too much estrogen is directly related to osteoporosis, deterioration of bone tissue. This is not surprising when we realize the function of estrogen is related to ostcoclast cells which dissolve old or imperfect bone.
Progesterone Reverses Osteoporosis: In the International Clinical Nutrition Review, Dr. Lee reported on his treatment of 100 post-menopausal women with NATURAL PROGESTERONE. Many of these women had lost height or suffered one or more fractures, both indications of osteoporosis. Bone density tests were used to monitor the effects of the therapy. In his report, Dr. Lee writes, "It was common to see a 10% increase (in bone density) in the first 6 to 12 months and annual increase of 3% to 5% until stabilizing at the levels of healthy 35 year olds." Further, "Neither age nor time from menopause was an apparent factor. the faster increases occurred in those with the lowest initial bone densities...the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures dropped to zero."

Dr. Lee describes the case of a 72 year old who was especially conscientious in following his therapeutic program. She suffered from back pains and kyphosis and had lost height (x-rays revealed an advance case of osteoporosis. Dual-photon densitometry tests over a 2 1/2 years on Dr. Lee's program revealed an average increase of over 29% in the bone density of the lumbar vertebrae. "The vertebrae of the lowest mineral density increased over 39% in mineral density." His conclusion runs contrary to current opinion, "Osteoporosis would appear to be reversible."
CONCLUSION: Menopause is not an estrogen deficient disease, in spite of current opinion. The hormone that will bring relief to most women is natural progesterone.

Neils Lauersen, M.D., co-author of PMS: Pre-Menstrual Syndrome and You and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at New York Medical College, reports that more than 90% of patients in his practice who have tried natural progesterone have found relief. The medical/pharmaceutical cartel profits big from the sale of synthetic hormones, and is not really interested in a low cost, non-toxic alternative. It is only the uninformed woman who suffers the consequence of ignorance and greed. If you are experiencing: PMS/Cramps, Menopause Symptoms, Headaches/Migraines, Breast tenderness, Moodswings/Depression, Decreased sex drive, Inability to Lose Weight, Hot Flashes/Nite Sweats, Fibrocystic breasts, Uterine Fibroids, Water retention, bloating, Vaginal Dryness, Hair Loss/Facial hair, Foggy thinking/Memory Loss, Osteoporosis(bone loss), Fatigue, Age & Liver Spots, Low thyroid symptoms, Adult acne,Insomnia, Infertility/Miscarriage, Arthritis, Low Blood Sugar Levels, Dry, Thin Wrinkly Skin, Uterine cancer, Fat gain, especially around the abdomen, hips, and thighs .....You may be experiencing hormone imbalance! All these symptoms have been linked to excessive estrogen. Many women have found relief by using Nature's (Sunshine) answer: Natural Progesterone. [Pro-G-Yam Cream]

Jerilyn C. Pyror, MD and Dr. John Lee found that by age 35 women are severely deficient in progesterone and that during the menopausal years, progesterone levels decrease to almost zero, while estrogen levels only decrease by 40 to 60 %. Dr. Lee describes this syndrome as "estrogen dominance". When this hormonal imbalance occurs, the estrogen becomes toxic to the body. -Georgiana
