Labrynthitis

My husband was diagnosed with labrynthitis by the ER doctor. I have read up on it and it appears to be so. The MD prescribed Antivert however pharmacy substituted meclizine instead (We just have to hope that it works the same, we are at their mercy when it comes to substitution). Anyway, does anyone have any knowledge of this inflammation of the inner ear? He can not hear out of his left ear and wonders how long before it clears up and if any herbs/supplements can speed up the process. He has a constant noise in his ear and his balance is still a bit wobbly. Thanks for any guidance. -Beverley Roth

I would try Lymphomax, if it is the right thing you will know it in a few days. Take what the bottle says. It is a wonderful product and a lot of times we forget how important the lymphatic system is in this toxic world. Also support the adrenals or the thyroid. Good to find which one is your weakest point. If not sure go Adrenal and maybe look at SUMA and pantothenic acid. -Virginia Dassler

I was diagnosed with labrynthitis the middle of May 2004. When it occurred (or happened) I was instantly deaf in my left ear and the noise started in my ear/head. I get very dizzy; I can't lay on my left side or back. If I do the room starts to spin. As I write this message today I am extremely dizzy and I find that the only thing I can do is rest. I spend a lot of time resting now!!! What a bore. I seem to be getting worse. I was hoping that eventually my brain would take care of things and my dizziness and balance would straighten itself out. I was assured by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist that this would happen. So far not. It is nice to know that someone out there is suffering the same as I am. I get a little scared at time. This disease is overwhelming. -Verla

Yes, I know all about labrynthitis as when it hit me four years ago there was not much known about it. After a lot of research this is the program I worked out for myself. Within 48 hours there was a great difference and after six weeks very little aftermath. Must admit I have to avoid stress and overdoing things otherwise slight dizziness re occurs. Labrynthitis is a very disturbing acute condition which causes vertigo, the sensation that either you or the room are spinning. It is aggravated by movement of the head or eyes, and is also by change of body position. The exact cause is not known, but it is presumed to be viral, as the condition often occurs in the context of a recent cold or flu-type illness. The semicircular canals of the inner ear (labyrinth) become inflamed. This disrupts their function, including the regulation of balance. Labrynthitis usually runs its course over a few weeks. There does not seem to be any specific anti-viral medications to treat it, we are left with the immune system to combat the infection.

To prevent worsening of symptoms during episodes of labrynthitis, keep still, rest during attacks, and gradually resume activity. Avoid sudden position changes. Do not try to read during attacks, and avoid bright lights. If the symptoms are severe or failing to resolve, a neurologist might be suggested or confirm the diagnosis, and decide if other diagnostic tests are needed. The specialist may also recommend some head-turning maneuvers under doctor's supervision, which can help speed up the recovery process.

SYMPTOMS OF LABRYNTHITIS: Dizziness Abnormal sensation of movement (vertigo) May be accompanied by nausea and vomiting May be severe May be continuous for up to a week at a time Severe episodes may be followed by transient episodes for several weeks Loss of balance, especially falling toward the affected side Hearing loss in the affected ear.

Suggested Program For Labrynthitis Chickweed 2 tablets twice daily Citrus Bioflavonoids 2 tablets 3 x daily MSM 2 tablets 3 x daily CBG Liquid Extract As directed on bottle -Doreen

Ginger also cleanses the inner ear, so effectively it often stops the "ringing" or tinnitus, so it would be worth using in this situation. 2 capsules 3x daily.

Any herb that moves lymph would seem to be helpful here, garlic, ginger, capsicum, etc.

I was diagnosed with a severe case of labrynthitis 10 years ago. If has reoccurred maybe three times a year but it was mild. Since enrolling in TaeKwon Do, I believe it has increased from all of the spinning around. A friend of my aunts has Mineres and was told to lie on her bed or the floor and move your body to a place (like sitting up quickly) that makes her dizzy and stay there. If she got too nauseous or it was too painful she was to try a different position. Keep moving to the same place. Your vertigo feeling should lessen as you are reprogramming your head and the fluid in your ears will shift. Well, I tried it this morning and I am feeling better. Not perfect but more functional without total discomfort. I think I will include daily doses of ginger, garlic, and capsicum to help prevent it. I also have a thyroid disorder. -Heidi

I don't wish this on anyone because I also suffered with this for 14 years. So, yes it can go on for more than 3 months! I battled it for a long time with no real lasting help from anyone.

Yes, Meclizine has helped many with symptoms of this illness. However, it does not get to the root of the problem. There is no cure for this unfortunately and the answer is not to be taking endless antibiotics which can only harm your immune system in the long run which is not what you want to do. In my own experience, I have never found a doctor or specialist that made my labrynthitis go away for good. And, you mention 'motor difficulties', by that do you mean it is effecting the nervous sytem? There are many symptoms that come with this problem.

I think it is great If you can find help and relief with NSP because I know the quality of their products. Is your problem reoccurring? -Denise Griffin

Using the ABC +D approach, ACTivate your system to heal by using enzymes, like Proactazyme Plus or Protease Plus along with a probiotic, like Bifidophilus, then something to BUILD like Mineral Chi along with a strong antioxidant like Hi Potency Grapine or Grapine w/Protectors, (skip the 'C') for now - then give DIRECT AID to your body's defenses against the virus using NSP's great virals ~ Pau d'arco, Una deGato, Olive Leaf Extract, Hi Potency Garlic, VS-C. Do you have someone who can muscle test you? You'll probably need to rotate among the virals for a while to get rid of this deeply-seated virus. VS-C is always a good one to start with. After you are feeling better and are stronger, a few months down the road, you will want to use the "C" part of the equation, which is to do a good cleanse. -Carol Matz

Q: Has anyone had experience working with a person with labyrinth. I'm working with a nine year old female who was diagnosed with this. She has extreme headaches, dizziness, earache, fatigue and legs that ache. This has been going on for 12 weeks and has gotten so bad she cannot attend school.

My mother had this for a while. They called it Labyrinthitis. It is believed to be an inner ear disturbance. Many people feel that candida and parasites are involved and also a virus may be involved. She did not go on a program for this, so I cannot suggest a specific protocol. However, if such is the case, then the usual anti-candida, anti-parasite and anti-fungal herbs should be checked out. Dietary modifications are a must (avoiding the sugar, molds, carbohydrates, fungus foods like mushrooms, etc., alcohol, etc.)" Black Walnut, Herbal Pumpkin, VS-C, Olive Leaf Extract, Caprylimune, colon cleanses, Flora Force, etc. I am sure others will contribute to this list. -Lisa Ayala

Don't forget the Chinese IF-C for inflammation. As well, no dairy , wheat, corn, sugar. I would also use Echinacea to clear the lymphatic. As well as lymphatic drainage massage. check for parasites. -Shay Johnson

Try CBG Ext. internally and put in the ear. This will usually handle an ear infection. I always use Colloidal Silver for all types of infections. -Gale Gravois

Try Olive Leaf Extract and using CBG internally in the ear. Also add Helichrysum with Colloidal Silver internally as well. A nice lymphatic massage around the outer area of the ear with Lavender Oil can help soothe and get things moving again. - Kimberly Balas

I had it in January this year, it all started when I began to lose my balance. My GP prescribed me Stenetil tablets. It went away after a few weeks. But then six months later I got it again and Im back on the Stenetil tablets. I was also prescribed antibiotics this time It seems that on both occasions, Id had a heavy cold or virus just before I caught it, so there is a defiant pattern emerging. At the moment Im still on the Stenetil tablets which seem to give me back my control. I've got to go back to my GP this week, and they may refer me to the Ear, eye and nose clinic at the hospital. What Id like to know is, what is the long term prognosis. Im quite concerned because Im in full time work, and the effect it will have on that if it persists in the future. -Steve

I had similar problems: ear infection that lead to vertigo, nausea, and vomiting. Went to an acupuncturist and in ONE visit and with THREE little needles, it all went away. Your infection keeps coming back because you are not treating the ROOT of the problem; the antibiotics only treat the symptoms (and since it's viral why are you even taking antibiotics?). Check out a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in your area - I've not had a recurrence since. -Redhawk

I was diagnosed with Labrynthitis about 7 years ago. I was so sick for about 3 months, dizzy and nauseated. The doctor said that Valium was the only thing that he knew of that helped. The problem with Valium is that when you take it, you have to go to bed! I had to work. After awhile, the malady would get better by afternoon, and I dreaded going to sleep at night because I would wake up so sick in the morning. One day, after the 3 months, I woke up free! It has recurred about once a year since, never for as long. My doctor called it a "wicked disease" and he was right! He said the cause was a virus, the same virus that causes Bells Palsey and there is no cure. -Joy
