Homeopathy - Scientific Research

Do Homeopathic Methods Work?
Monrovia, Calif.--Homeopathic practitioners are hailing a "landmark" scientific breakthrough inspired by homeopathic methodology as lending credibility to this alternative medical treatment.

The new research, led by Shui-Yin Lo, Ph.D., at the American Technologies Group, located here, seems to verify the experiences of two centuries of homeopathic physicians. The scientists discovered, identified and characterized a unique type of stable, nonmelting ice crystal that maintains the electrical field found in all water molecules. Called IE crystals ("I" for ice, "E" for the electrical field), these nanometer-sized water clusters are created when a substance is placed in distilled water, then vigorously shaken or stirred, and then repeatedly diluted and agitated.

Homeopathy contains two primary theoretical tenets: the principle of "similars" and the use of dilutions, called "potencies." Similars states that patients with particular signs and symptoms can be cured if given an agent that produces the same signs and symptoms in a healthy individual. One theory of potentization is that remedies retain biological activity if they are repeatedly diluted and agitated between each dilution-in much the same manner as in Lo's research.

"There seems to be something unique in water that undergoes extreme dilution, and we now have the laboratory evidence to verify it," Lo says.

The use of very small doses or substances to promote significant biological or chemical activity is not new to science or medicine, notes Dana Ullman, M.P.H., a practicing homeopathic physician from Berkeley, Calif.

"This new research confirms the existence of IE crystals and suggests that there may be something ‘there' in homeopathic medicines after all," Ullman says. "At least we can now verify that homeopathic medicines are biologically active. This is a landmark discovery."

Lo acknowledges the link between his work and that of homeopathic medicine, but tempered enthusiasm that his research corroborates homeopathy's properties. While noting his initial research methods were taken from the pages of homeopathy, Lo says his research ultimately is based on "orthodox science--physics and chemistry." And he notes his proprietary methods of potentization differ to some extent from standard homeopathic operating procedures.

"Our interest is not to prove or disprove homeopathy," Lo says. Still, he suggests his work will help to "validate in the long run homeopathic properties."

Since its inception nearly 200 years ago, homeopathy has seemed scientifically implausible-- treating a disease by administering minute doses of a remedy, sometimes diluting past the point where any original molecules of the starting substance remain. Yet for all its skeptics, homeopathy enjoys growing use. And, Ullman says, Lo's work is "beginning to prove that diluting and shaking does keep at least water active in some way, shape or form."

"Thus far, we have only systematically tested substances that have been diluted 1:10 13 times. Homeopathic doctors sometimes use medicines that are diluted 1:10, 30, 200, 1,000 times, and we have not tested these extreme dilutions yet," Lo says. "However, I would not be surprised if IE crystals are also observed in these doses. Based on our research to date, every water dilution beyond the sixth has IE crystals in them."

Lo's research is the basis of a product, "The Force," which increases fuel efficiency and decreases emissions in automobiles. A symposium on IE crystals expanded on Lo's work to note applications beyond combustion enhancement, including cosmetics, detergent systems, pharmaceuticals and medicine.

Benjamin Bonavida, Ph.D., professor and former chair of UCLA's department of microbiology and immunology, found that one type of IE crystal induced significant increases in various cytokines, which are cancer-fighting substances found in the immune system.

"The IE crystals we tested have created such dramatic augmentation of regulators and mediators of host immunity that additional research is not only important, it is vital," Bonavida says. Todd Runestad
