Heartburn

What to do for a 16 year old having heartburn? -Sis

This is indigestion or CAN be caused by a hiatal hernia. I would prefer not giving a 16 year old Food Enzymes -- but you might look into the possibility of a hiatal hernia and give them 3 Safflower prior to each meal. This will encourage their body to produce more HCL on it's own. -Georgiana

Herbally, I have used with MUCH Success,

1. DIGESTIVE BITTERS TONIC (helps to tighten the sphincter muscle at the top of the stomach AND encourage the body to produce its own digestive enzymes and acid)

2. ALOE VERA JUICE (helps to soothe and heal AND COOL. Especially good to take as the burning is happening, but take it on a regular basis for a while - with or without pain present. It takes time to heal this area. Aloe can also help to alleviate constipation, which can also contribute to heartburn.)

3. NUTRI-CALM OR STRESS-J (feeds the nervous system to help handle stress and its effects on the body, mind and spirit.) (Not that we have any stress in our lives..........HA!)

*Do not use FOOD ENZYMES, PDA, or anything with the enzyme protease in it until this person has been on the aloe juice for a while - 1-2 months, then, add Proactazyme Plus with meals only.

MUST DOs:

1. STOP ANY CAFFEINE PRODUCTS! This weakens the muscle at the top of the stomach. Soda Pop, coffee, tea, even chocolate!

2. SIT UP PROPERLY! Slouching pushes the stomach up into the diaphram, thus, adding to the cause of weakening that muscle.

3. DON'T EAT LATE AT NIGHT OR RIGHT BEFORE BED! This food, still in the stomach, has trouble moving down through the system (not to mention can't digest properly) when you are lying down and/or sleeping.

4. CHEW YOUR FOOD - Thoroughly and SLOWLY! Stop rushing through meals - I know this is impossible in the school systems, unfortunately. Parents might have to intervene at the schools, if necessary, to allow time for eating AND digestion. (Schools have a LOT to learn themselves.)

5. This person can learn how to pull their own stomach down. Seek a COMPETENT (not all of them are) health professional or chiropractor in your area. Not all of them know how to pull a stomach down, correctly and safely.

6. Last, but not least, There may be a need for a COMPETENT counselor (not all of these are competent, either.) If there are stresses that this person may not be able to, or may not with to, discuss with the parent - nothing personal Mom and Dad. Sometimes, it helps to have an outsider's point of view - at 16 or any other age. -Jan St. Cyr
