HCL VS Acidophilus, PDA

Hello all, I am confused about herbs for an underactive stomach. If a person is low on hydrochloric acid why wouldn't you advise hydrochloric acid in pill form? I have heard people advise Acidophils, Bifidophilus or enzymes. Could someone explain the difference between all the above or tell me where I can read the above differences. -Teressa Wagers

If someone has underactive HCL then the product of choice is PDA. PDA contains hydrochloric acid which is naturally produced in the stomach. It also contains pepsin, a digestive enzyme which aids in protein digestion. Acidophilus and Bifidophilus are not digestive enzymes but are friendly bacteria or flora which are normally present in the intestines. The times to replenish this bacteria is after antibiotics have destroyed them during the presence of candida albicans, after the use of drugs or medications and also when one wants to stimulate the activity of the bowel. So in a nutshell, hydrochloric acid, PDA is for the stomach and acidophilus is for the intestines. -Gail Pfaff

Gail's info is right on, but you can also increase hydrochloric acid level with the herb Safflower. Food Enzymes also have some hydrochloric acid, but not nearly as much as PDA. This person also needs to drink at least 8 oz of water hour before meals. The stomach uses water to help make HCL for digestion. -Marty Kliesh
