Hint #1618: Fish oil & arrhythmia
Two more studies confirm that fish oil reduces the risk of heart attacks and the risk of arrhythmias – even the more serious atrial fibrillation.

In one study, intake of three grams of fish oil daily for six months, which provided one gram of omega-3 fatty acids a day, was compared with a placebo. Those taking the fish oil had significantly fewer and less severe arrhythmias.

Six months after stopping the intake of fish oil, however, the risk reverted to the status indicated before taking the fish oil.

Another study showed that those who eat fish one to four times a week are 30 percent less likely to suffer from atrial fibrillation, and those who eat fish five or more times a week reduce the risk by 35 percent.

In people with existing arrhythmias, supplementing with fish oil reduces the number and severity of episodes of arrhythmia.

Recently, properties of fatty acids were awarded a qualified health claim by the US FDA. This means that conventional foods will now be able to display a health claim (previously restricted to supplements) for omega-3 fatty acids.

But beware overconsumption in supplemental form. The FDA recommends not exceeding 2 grams a day from supplemental sources.

Omega-3 PUFAs not only protect heart health, but also cancer and other diseases, too.

[Warnings: 1. Any high-oil food or supplement can get rancid quickly. Be sure your supplemental choice is carefully selected. 2. Some varieties of farmed salmon contain ratios of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids reversed because of how the fish are bred and fed, and this is not in your best health interest. Wild Alaskan salmon may be a better choice. 3. Canning does not wreak havoc on fatty acids to the degree that it does on vitamins, so canned sardines could be an acceptable choice.]
